Burma-Bangladesh road, air links to start soon

Construction of a new highway linking Teknaf, Bangladesh, to former Arakan State 
capital Akyab in Burma will start in January. This coincides with new flights routes 
from Dhaka to Yangon, according to Myanmar Ambassador Myo Mint Than.

Mekong patrol launched from Yunnan

China, Laos, Burma and Thailand on Sunday launched a new joint patrol 
on the Mekong River in the Golden Triangle Region in an attempt to normalize 
trade and transportation after an incident last year in which 13 Chinese 
sailors were killed on the river.

Yet another trip to the “last frontier” market in Asia last week was another 
eye-opener for me and my colleagues.
Over the past year or so, I have had a few opportunities to visit Myanmar 
and am enjoying every opportunity. The scenery is magnificent, the resources 
abundant, and the people have the drive to strive for a better life and to pull 
themselves out of the hand-to-mouth living they had been accustomed to.

China remains committed to its investments in Burma, and in particular would like

 to see the Monywa copper mine project continue in “a spirit of mutual cooperation,” 

a Chinese embassy spokesperson told Mizzima.

Burma, Vietnam presidents vow to increase bilateral trade

The presidents of Burma and Vietnam have pledged to increase annual bilateral 
trade to US $500 million by 2015.
The current level of trade is little more than half that figure. According to 
Burma’s Ministry of Commerce, trade between April 1 and August 14, 2012, 
stood at $114 million with some $67 million of that amount in Burmese exports.

President announces 30-member Monywa investigation committee

Burma’s President’s Office in Naypyitaw announced on December 1 the names of 
a 30-strong team to investigate whether the Monywa copper mine project should be 
continued, and to determine what level of force was used to contain the protests at the site.
